Are you really feeling lost (or could this be something else)?

This is for you if you are feeling a bit lost at the moment. If you are missing a direction and are not sure what to do next.

And before we dive into this topic, let me tell you: I know feeling lost sucks. I felt like this for a long time and it was an exhausting period in my life. I felt like I was not using my potential, I was betraying my dreams, and that life was passing by while I did not even know what to do with my life.

Is “feeling lost” accurate?

This approach of talking about feeling lost might be a bit different from what you normally hear. Because this time, I will not give you tools to find direction, or techniques to identify what your strengths and passion are. But this time I want to lovingly challenge you with one thought:

Are you really feeling lost, or could this be something different?

Because very often, a lack of direction is nothing else than fear dressed in camouflage pants.

In other words: it could be that your feeling of being lost simply means that you are not taking your desires seriously enough.

That you do not allow yourself to follow your dreams.

That you are holding yourself back when in fact, you would need to.

I know, this might be hard to read. I know that you are so committed to creating a life that is different from how it looks like right now. I know that you are brave and are not shying away from doing the work. So bear with me here, I have some thoughts on how you can dig a bit deeper here.

“I don’t know what to do with my life”

A lack of direction translates into “I don't know what to do with my life”. This can manifest in your career (“I don’t know what job is the right for me and would finally feel fulfilling”), in where you live (“Do I want to spend the rest of my life here or move to somewhere else”) or your lifestyle (traveling, social life, income, work-load, physical environment,…).

But lovely, you DO know what to do with your life!

And I say that in the most loving way - because I know that feeling lost just sucks!
And I know that you are working hard on gaining clarity!
I know you are reading the book, doing the exercises, taking the courses.

But what if that was true?
That deep inside you DO KNOW what you want from life (and you also have an idea already of how to make this happen).

You just put some layers on top of your dreams.
Fears, doubts, beliefs about yourself, and beliefs about the world and what is possible.

So if that WAS true, then the question is no longer “What do I want to do with my life - what is my purpose?” but

“How can I remove these layers and finally live the life that I am meant to live?”

The crucial step: start dreaming again

Once you’ve realized that all that you want, all the clarity that you seek lays already within you and just waits to be rediscovered by you, there is one simple step to take: start dreaming again!

Create space to allow your dreams to surface.

(How to do that: read below)

“I don’t know what to do with my life”

A lack of direction could be a sign that you are not taking your dreams seriously enough.

So if that WAS true, then the question is no longer “What do I want to do with my life - what is my purpose?” but “How can I remove what´s holding me back and finally live the life that I am meant to live?”

How can you re-connect with your dreams?

So how can you move those layers on top of your dreams away? How can you start dreaming? How can you reconnect with your vision so you can bring it to life?

The answer is not a very fancy one, because the number one tool for you will be: start dreaming (duh ;-))

Here are a couple of ideas for you:

  • Sit in silence (literally: do nothing for a while so your dreams can surface)

  • meditate (in silence, or use a guided meditation on clarity. I love this one)

  • journal (these prompts or simply: “I am on this planet to…..”)

  • create a vision board

  • seek inspiration and connect with others who live a life that looks exciting to you.

Or start “dream experiments”

If that feels too big, or in case you prefer to create a “safer” container to dream, then start with “dream experiments”. This is particularly helpful in case you are an overthinker and tend to not only go really deep once you started thinking but also tend to start evaluating the risks involved and what potentially could all go wrong.

Dedicate some time (eg. 30 minutes) to fully tap into your dreams, let your desires speak, think big, bold, fearlessly. Ather these 30 minutes you stop dreaming and do something different instead. I recommend you set a timer to make this transition very clear.

It is important that you treat this as an experiment - as an occasion to explore without pressure, to playfully see what could be possible. Because you label it as an experiment (and nothing permanent or serious), your brain can relax, your survival instincts (that do not deal very well with any potential change) can remain silent, while your imagination can flow.

In the beginning things might feel very vague or potentially even scary because you might think: is this really possible? Will I ever get there?, but with time, your dreams will get more specific, more tangible - and something you could actually turn into your reality (only imagine!)

You got this!
